June, 2009

June 30, 2009:  An interesting story came out of Virginia about a particular security guard. The security guard worked a post at an Arlington strip mall. This particular guard, Homer Kelly, was charged with two counts of extortion. Allegedly, the guard confiscated some items from a group of teenagers last Friday and threatened to call their parents if the teenagers did not pay him a "fine". This sort of behavior is horrible. As the authority figure at that strip mall he was largely in control. From that position of power he attempted to scam a couple of teenagers.

June 28, 2009:  Everything went very well for On Guard Security Inc again this week. It may not seem newsworthy that everything went smoothly. I just feel that there should be a little more positive news reported about security guards and the security guard industry.

June 25, 2009:  There is much news about the security guard industry today. Most of the time any security guard news is either very negative or a great tragedy. It would be great to see more positive stories about the security guard industry.

June 24, 2009:  Last weekend brought 75 arrests in Nashville by the Operation Safer Streets initiative. The initiative which took place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday also seized ten grams of marijuana and one gram of cocaine.

June 23, 2009:  Late last month Segway introduced two new models of their small electric vehicles. The two new models are designed specifically with security guards and police officers in mind. The small electric vehicles were popular among some as a patrol vehicle in areas such as malls. The new models come with a storage space made specifically for security gear among other improvements.

June 22, 2009:  On June 21, 2009 a security guard in Baltimore prevented a robbery and shot one of the would-be robbers. After being confronted by the armed security guard, the two men ran to the car and drove away. During this time one of the robbers and the security guard exchanged gunfire. Fortunately, no one inside the store or the security guard was injured. One of the robbers recieved several gunshot wounds. It is not clear how much property damage was done at the grocery store. Although the robbery was prevented, there is much damage that was done, and customers will unquestionably remember the gunfight. The best type of contract security service in most cases is a security service that prevents would-be criminals.

June 20, 2009:  Stephen T. Johns, the security guard that was slain at the Holocaust museum, made national news again yesterday. Mr. Johns funeral was attended by hundreds of his friends, family members, and other people. The funeral concluded with an honor guard of officers from local police agencies carrying the casket from the church.

June 19, 2009:  Sadly, another on-duty security guard was killed this week. Chevor Wint was shot and killed on Tuesday. He was shot while on patrol. Chevor was armed and had many years of experience in the security industry. Although this murder did not receive the same amount of publicity as last week's shooting in Washington D.C., it is every bit as sad. The increase in number of these sort of incidents is very troubling. Who will guard the security guards? I think the trend in these types of incidents is very telling in many ways. It's certainly a good reminder for everyone to reassess their security procedures.

June 18, 2009:  Today we appointed a new Chief at On Guard Security Inc. Kyle has been a part On Guard Security Inc since its inception. Kyle has been a great asset to our company and will continue to be.

June 17, 2009:  We have seen a lot of interest in security guard employment through our website. We will continue to accept contact information, and we will keep that information on file. Thanks.

June 16, 2009:  Decectives in Nashville arrested a suspect yesterday on charges of aggravated robbery. The victims in this case were contacted through a chat service. This kind of crime and other property crimes will only continue to increase in these economic conditions. It is as important as ever to have security.

June 11, 2009:  Sadly, Stephen Johns (the security guard that was shot yesterday at Washington's Holocaust Museum) died from wounds he recieved after James von Brunn (the gunman) opened fired yesterday at the museum. At thist time the gunman remains in critical condition. Apparently, James von Brunn walked into the museum yesterday with a .22-caliber rifle and began firing as soon as he entered. The gunman was quickly taken down by other security officers that were on duty in the museum.

June 10, 2009:  A gunman began shooting in the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. today. The gunman shot one security guard that was stationed in the Holocaust Museum. At least one other security guard returned fire. Two people were shot. The gunman was shot, and a security guard. As I write, there is no news on their condition. Who knows what kind of damage the gunman could have done had it not been for these private security guards.

Once again extra duty officers helped to maintain safer streets in Nashville. As part of an on-going initiative against drunk driving, extra duty officers were back on the street last weekend. Last weekend these officers arrested 38 people for DUI.

June 9, 2009:  Sadly, a trooper from Pennsylvania was killed on June 8, 2009. The death happened in the line of duty during a gun fight.

June 5, 2009:  Nashville's Operation Safer Streets is quickly becoming a success. Last weekend's operation was no different. Operation Safer Streets has led to many arrests since its inception. Many outstanding warrants have been served. Many guns have been taken off the street. The initiative has also helped reduce the amount of gang activity in several areas of Nashville. There is little question that these efforts have led to safer streets for everyone in Nashville.

June 4, 2009:  Sadly, a contract security guard was murdered this week. The guard had a position in an armored vehicle. He was shot an killed during a robbery in Washington on June 2.

June 3, 2009:  According to statistics from the Metro Nashville Police Department, the number of crimes reported in Nashville decreased in 2008 in a majority of the zip codes that make up the Nashville, Tennessee area. Property crimes had increased in twelve of these areas.

June 2, 2009:  Extra duty officers working under a grant from the Governor's Highway Safety Office in Nashville are proving to be very effective against drunk drivers. According to the Metro Police Department, these officers charged 43 people with DUI last weekend.

June, 1 2009:  There was a 38 percent rise in hate crimes in Nashville.
